Toronto’s Lowest of the Low are beloved pillars of Canadian indie rock, celebrated for clever wordplay, airtight harmonies, and joyous live shows. Their 1991 debut, Shakespeare My Butt, became the best-selling Canadian independent release of its time and repeatedly landed in Chart Magazine’s Top 10 Canadian Albums; the band earned Gold certification and was inducted into the Canadian Indie Rock Hall of Fame in 2008.
Still charging forward, the group’s sixth studio album, Welcome to the Plunderdome (Oct. 6, Sonic Envy/Warner), delivers melodic-but-muscular rock with a sharp social conscience. The current lineup features Ron Hawkins (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Nichols (guitars/vocals/harmonica/keys), David Alexander (drums), Greg Smith (bass; ex-The Weakerthans), and Michael McKenzie (guitar/vocals).
The advance single “Hey Kid (You Got Soul!)” has topped 300,000 YouTube views, and the album is their biggest seller since Shakespeare My Butt.
